HID lamps have a widespread application because of their high luminous efficacy. Recently, attempts were made to extract mercury out of the discharges to produce environmentally friendly lamps [1], That causes changes in the electrical as well as the optical lamp properties. The spectral out-put of high-pressure lamps is dominated by optically thick radiation. Therefore radiation transport calculations are necessary to describe the energy balance and the spectral out-put of such lamps. It is the aim of the work to describe the line broadening under the influence of high Xe pressure up to 200 bar in the discharge. Spectroscopical and pyrornetrical studies with a high spatial resolution are performed to measure the distribution of the plasma parameters. Calculated line profiles for Na and Tl lines are compared with the experiment.
