The dry construction which is closely associated with the manufacture of plasterboard has a continuously-growing influence in all spheres of building. In German speaking countries there is a noticeable trend towards dry and lightweight construction and distinct possibilities for growth in these sectors. Many new developments on material and system level of dry constructions are accomplished in Germany. Apart from the efficiency, the cost effectiveness, the increase in the load-bearing capacity and the functionality there are also further developments in the field of the structuring and design of plasterboard and fiber-reinforced systems. The VHT (Versuchsanstalt für Holz- und Trockenbau –Institute for Wood-, Drywall and Lightweight-Construction) concentrates on the interactions between load-bearing structures, form and appearance concerning the use of lightweight and dry construction materials. The use of functionally optimised building components in dry and lightweight construction goes hand-in-hand with gaining space and greater flexibility in use. Further "soft skills" are lower consumption of resources and good sound dam ping measurements. All these charac teristics of dry and lightweight construction are essential elements in planning for the future.
