THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE CEMENT INDUSTRY - BEST AVAILABLE TECHNIQUES 'BAT'

In cement manufacture, the main concern for the environment is the emission of dust resulting from both point sources and diffuse sources, with their level of emission depending on the performances of the corresponding dedusting equipment. Moreover, certain stages in the cement manufacturing process release, besides dust, oxides of sulphur, nitrogen and carbon as well as small amounts of heavy metals and volatile organic compounds. As a result of the enforced legislation, the cement industry in Europe has seen notable results with reference to abating the emission of industrial pollutants by using or developing novel technologies, or upgrading existing technologies. The paper presents best available techniques—BAT—for cement plants in order to reduce considerably the emission of pollutants, with eye-opening effects on enhancing the quality of the environment and diminishing production losses.
