Ship motion theories and a 2D numerical slamming calculation method (Zhao et al, 1996) are validated for a 20-knot, 120-meter car carrier. A nonlinear strip theory method is used to calculate ship-wave relative motions, which are input to the slamming analyses. Model tests of the car carrier have been carried out in regular head and bow quartering waves of various heights. Slamming on two panels in the upper part of the bow flare has been studied. Calculated pressures agree quite well with the experiments, especially for the most severe slamming events.
