STEPWISE-CLOSURE PROCESS: A FIELD CASE IN A DRINKING WATER AQUIFER

In July 1998, remedial actions were suspended at a Superfund site in California. Prior to suspention of the remedial activities at the site, several aggressive remedial actions had been implemented in the last twenty years to reduce and contain source concentrations. These actions included soil excavation, groundwater extraction and treatment, potential conduit well investigations and sealing, the installation of a soilbentonite slurry cutoff wall, and the construction and operation of a high-capacity soil vapor extraction system. The residual plume is now being depleted effectively by natural attenuation, which is being monitored by an approved sampling network. The property was recently sold and developed into a retail shopping center, which has been occupied by various retail shops since February 1999.
