THE EFFECT OF SOIL TEMPERATURE ON TNT BIODEGRADATION UNDER AEROBIC/ANAEROBIC CONDITIONS

An experimental set-up (batch and dynamic tests) was designed to determine the TNT biodegradation for diverse soils, TNT concentrations, environmental conditions, and the contribution of soil washing and biodegradation to the overall TNT removal during remediation. The contribution of biodegradation was almost twice as high under anaerobic compared to aerobic conditions. About 55.3% and 28.3% of TNT was biodegraded aerobically at 20 and 10oC, respectively, as compared to 99.7% at 20oC, and 99.3% at 10oC, under anaerobic conditions. Biodegradation rates of 1.32-1.52 mg TNT/kg?h under anaerobic conditions during phase 1 were reduced to 0.025-0.03 mg/kg?h in phase 2. The aerobic biodegradation rates were of 0.044-0.063 mg TNT/kg?h. Aerobic biodegradation was much more temperature dependent than the anaerobic process. In the case of the aerobic process, the lowest biodegradation was observed at 10oC, and the process lasted only for 41 hours. The most effective TNT biodegradation was found at 30oC, as indicated by high O2 consumption and CO2 production rates of ca. 458 and 676 μL/h, respectively. The results may be used as a first screening for selection and developing of effective bioremediation strategy for TNT contaminated soils.
