An Integrated Decision-Support Tool for Sustainable Energy Supply

Within the China Energy Technology Program (CETP), sponsored by ABB in conjunction with the Alliance for Global Sustainability (AGS), PSI, together with American (MIT), numerous Chinese, Japanese (Tokyo University) and Swiss (ETHZ and EPFL) partners, investigated how the future electricity supply in China could be made more sustainable. Most detailed analyses were carried out for the Shandong province though a wide spectrum of results was obtained for whole China. Representatives of major Chinese stakeholders participated in the program. CETP has been composed of a large number of multi-disciplinary tasks, including for example assessment of severe accident risks as well as environmental impact and external cost assessment, with complex internal dependencies and interactions. The project produced a broad spectrum of deliverables including databases, analytical models, technical reports covering the sector-specific results, and a book summarizing the approaches used and the main achievements. The ambition was, however, to enable Chinese stakeholders and a wide range of other users a flexible access to the results and insights, including options for exploration directed by specific interests. This has been made possible through the extension of the integration framework already implemented within the CETP. The analytic methods developed within CETP and implemented as software have been made available on a DVD. This product presents the various tasks for the benefit of the users and is itself a central contribution to the overall integration effort. The software has been developed by the Paul Scherrer Institute in cooperation with external programming and multi-media specialists, and with the support and input provided by project partners.
