Development work has been carried out on the optimization of a small ducted fan system for a personal sized VTOL aircraft. A simple and reliable method for transferring power from the aircraft's powerplant to the ducted fans has also been developed. A major focus of the effort has been the use of fixed-pitch fan blades and balancing their shortcomings versus benefits. Other areas of focus include methods used to maintain very high powertrain efficiencies and methods used to eliminate the effect of airloads and lifting loads on all dynamic powertrain components. Non-technical information is presented on the proposed solutions to these issues, pending further testing. In addition, based on the results of parametric ducted fan studies to date, several graphs which depict anticipated vehicle performance are also presented. The ducted fan system design is up-scalable, and an example of its integration into a proposed small two-man (or UAV/RPV) VTOL aircraft (platform) is also presented.
