It is lucrative to save pump energy cost for a water distribution system. There are many approaches to achieve the goal of energy cost saving. One of the effective means is to optimally schedule the pump operation. A solution methodology has been developed for optimizing pump scheduling while satisfying system operation criteria. Pump operation is optimized by applying a competent genetic algorithm. This paper demonstrates a case study that is conducted for a benchmark example previously studied by using conventional nonlinear optimization technique and simulated annealing. The study shows that the great cost saving can be achieved by performing pump operation optimization. The results obtained in this paper are compared to the previous study. It illustrates that the pump optimization model, based upon the competent genetic algorithm, outperforms the previously developed methods.
