Increasing demands for mass-production of high quality aspherical and freeform surfaces at low cost have imposed challenging requirements on manufacturing systems. A European project - Nano Grind - has been set up to meet the market gap, aiming to develop a high precision 5-axis grinding machine integrated with ELID grinding technology. In contrast to some grinding machines developed by additive design, the Nano Grind machine follows the 'total design' principle. Positioned as an industrial machine, a prototype is under development guided by precision engineering principles. This machine incorporates a unique measurement system that satisfies the Abbe principle, and an innovative metrology system containing three metrology frames is developed. The machine is further equipped with an in-situ measurement device to enhance machine performance. Error budgeting and kinematic design techniques are also applied in the machine design.
