Two-dimensional finite element analysis on reinforced concrete (RC) columns, whose axial forces are changeable, are carried out with parameters of considering lateral confinement effect form lateral steels (mainly hoop steels) or not. Based on the analysis results, it can be concluded that lateral confinement effect have a large effect on capacities of RC columns especially for high confinement effect, and it is necessary for correctly simulating and mechanical characteristics and failure modes to consider lateral confinement effect from lateral steels, etc. Moreover, according to this research, modified Kent-Park model can be used to simulate the lateral confinement effect of lateral steels well. Insides, the deformation and the distributions of principal compressive stress, tensile strain are discussed.
