Through this study, we reviewed the present situation of the coastal protection system in the South Pacific. Though many countries have paid many efforts to protect their coastal areas, the effects are limited and unsuccessful. This study identified three common constraints, and suggested approaches needed to overcome these constraints. Based on these consideration, we also developed a set of criteria for assessing existing and desirable technologies for coastal protection appropriate for the South Pacific, which will be indicated in our presentation. The study also suggested that advanced technological methods should be imported from successful projects in similar coastal settings from developed countries. These artificial structures should be combined with the region's existing natural coastal defense system, such as mangroves and corals, to obtain optimum advantage of coastal protection.
