Towards a Pragmatic Approach to Knowledge Management: A Multi-Perspectives Analysis

Knowledge management (KM) has attracted increasing interest worldwide with numerous attempts to define knowledge and KM, reflecting a wide range of views and the multifaceted nature of KM. This often results in the confusion and difficulty for understanding KM and KM practices and prevents organizations from making a full use of KM potential. This paper explores different views on KM theory and practices and proposes a pragmatic approach for effective KM in an organization. The pragmatic approach views knowledge as object, process, resource and capacity and recognizes the need for developing an intelligent approach capable of coding, storing, distributing, sharing and maintaining organizational knowledge in a systematical manner. Such an approach provides a better understanding of KM theory and practices and facilitates a smooth flow of knowledge within an organization.
