Generally speaking, intelligent user interfaces are computational entities that are capable of communicating and reasoning. They are human-computer interfaces that aim to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and naturalness of human-computer interaction by representing, reasoning, and acting on models of the user, domain, task, discourse, and media. A user model is a knowledge source in an intelligent user interface that contains explicit assumptions on all aspects of the user that may be relevant to the interactive behavior of the system. Explicit user model acquisition methods require overt action on the part of the system designer (perhaps the users themselves) to build user models. Implicit user model is created during a user interacts with the system. Implicit acquisition can avoid the explicit encoding bottleneck and reduce the burden on the application. This paper discusses the intelligent user interface technology firstly. It describes some approaches of user modeling then. It introduces explicitly acquiring methods and implicit acquiring methods both as well. Finally, the paper presents an approach that is used to build and. update user interest profiles according to the implicit feedback from users.
