MagMax™ is a new product, drawing on the best features of Mechanical Sealed Pumps (MSP), Canned Motor Pumps (CMP) and Magnet Drive Pumps (MDP) to deliver a totally unique sealless drive system that is changing the pumping market. The MagMax™ Canned Magnet Drive Pump (CMDP) was launched to pump specifiers and users world-wide in June 2001, since then it has received critical acclaim for its combination of simplicity of design (and hence low cost of ownership) of a magnet drive pump and true secondary containment of a canned motor pump. This paper presents the technical challenges that were encountered during the development of CMDP and discusses the ways in which solutions to these challenges were developed. In particular, this paper discusses the following: 1. The development of a unique high efficiency motor (more than 10% greater efficiency than typical canned motor pumps). 2. The development of the 'Vapour Detector' that uniquely identifies the onset of dry running before pump failure has time to occur. 3. How the design concept allows for the use of silicon carbide bearings, as standard, without the necessity for any special bearing alignment techniques. 4. Achievement of certification for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.(ATEX) 5. Case studies of applications that have benefited from the unique features of this new sealless drive technology.
