Port Logistics: the Antwerp Case

The reorganization of the supply chain, including the increased outsourcing, is creating opportunities and challenges for the logistical position of the port of Antwerp. The logistical sector in the port of Antwerp has been adapted to even more specialized logistical demands and has thus developed a heterogenous supply of logistical services. From being a logistical service provider, the port authority has adapted a more facilitating role. It has made tactical choices as to which logistical companies should be allocated in the port area. At the same time, its policy reassures the preservation of employment and added value. Being confronted with a limited supply of space, it is actively looking for alternatives outside the port area in the form of logistical networks with its natural hinterland.
