This paper describes a component mode method, with reduction, to find the lower natural frequencies of a system. The method applies where the connections can be characterised by stiffness and damping. A matrix set involving the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the components together with a 'connection' matrix is solved to give eigensolutions of the system; reduction is affected by approximating the components by a reduced set of eigenvalues and an equally reduced set of displacements in the eigenvector. Computer results for a simple system indicate that considerable reduction still provides good prediction of system natural frequency. The choice of displacements in the reduced eigenvector has no effect on the reduced solution.
