In this paper, the progress on improving physical properties of functional materials by laser irradiation is reported and discussed. Sintered with a CO_(2) laser, a novel Ta_(2)O_(5)-based ceramics with maximum kappa of 450 can be obtained at ambient conditions. The electrical conductivity of PCDF induced by excimer laser irradiation was found to increase from 10~(-13) (OMEGA)~(-1)(centre dot)cm~(-1) to 10~(-4) (OMEGA)~(-1)(centre dot)cm~(-1). Significant improvement in the magneto transport properties of La_(0.67)Ca_(0.33)MnO_(3) thin film irradiated by CO_(2) laser in air can be obtained. Irradiated with a CO_(2) laser, the polarization and piezoelectric constants d_(15) of Ba_(0.5)Sr_(1.5)Na_(0.6)K_(0.4)Nb_(5)O_(15) ceramic was found to increase to 120 pC/N. Based upon the characterization of the samples, the phase, micro-structure, and the mechanism of property modification in laser irradiated samples were analyzed.
