Sustaining Urban Air Quality through management of Urban Forests

Urban areas are frequently warmer and more polluted than surrounding areas. According to the U.S. EPA, the temperature in cities and suburbs may be up to 10°F (5.6°C) warmer than surrounding areas. (http://www.epa.gov/heatisland/about/index.html) Temperatures in urban areas rise as trees and vegetation are replaced by buildings, asphalt pavement, and other impermeable, dark surfaces. The increased temperature plays a role in creating urban smog.
