Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is toxic and odorous compound produced by various industrial processes. The biological degradation of hydrogen sulfide was studied in biotrickling filter with newly isolated Alcaligenes sp. S-8 strain. In liquid cultures, strain S-8 could degrade thiosulfate and other sulfur compounds. The maximum growth rate ( μ_(max)) of isolate was 0.21 h~(-1). At EBRT of 7s, 100% removal was observed with an inlet concentration of 100ppm by Alcaligenes sp.S-8. The maximum elimination capacity in biotrickling filter was determined as 89.7g H2S m~(-3)h. The results of this study demonstrate that newly isolated Alcaligenes sp.S-8 can be used for the biological treatment of hydrogen sulfide.
