A parameter design approach was used to identify the key variables responsible for foundry related defects in an investment casting. The parameter design was conducted on the production line at the Hitchiner S.A. de C.V. foundry in Santiago Tianguistenco, Mexico. Several foundry variables were tested simultaneously using orthogonal arrays. The approach showed how foundry parameters affected defect occurrence, and how the foundry parameters interacted with each other. The preferred level for each parameter was identified for each type of defect and contradictions between preferred levels were identified. This powerful technique of experimental design and analysis can be used to reduce operational costs and improve quality.
