Partial discharges degrade and deteriorate the oil progressively and hence may lead to catastrophic failure in a transformer. There were studies on the effect of oil flow on discharges and most of them concentrate on electrification in transformers due to streaming velocity in transformer oil. This paper focused on the effect of oil flow on the discharges generated by the insulation defects. Three types of discharges were studied and they are floating, surface and oil discharges. The changes of discharge activities due to the oil flow, in terms of maximum charge quantity, discharge numbers per cycle and Q-Phi distribution were experimentally studied in this paper.
