An Automated System for Cost Estimating and Cost/Schedule Control for Industrial Construction Projects

Cost estimating and cost/schedule control of industrial construction projects needs careful planning in order to ensure the effective use of cost and time. The need for developing an efficient computer automated system that can process data associated with pipe configurations, and the related issues concerning the type of work, the required man-hour, equipments, and the material required to perform these tasks cannot be ignored. This paper presents the process used to implement an automated system for cost estimating and cost/schedule control for the construction of industrial facilities. The methodology of this automated system has been incorporated into a computer system that integrates both a cost estimating module and time tracking module. Both modules share a central database system. This methodology has been developed in collaboration with an industrial partner (Chancellor Industrial Construction Ltd., Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). The developed computer system was implemented using SQL-Server, MS-Visual Basic programming language, and Active Reports for MS-Visual Basic.
