The Centre Street Bridge in Calgary, originally constructed in 1916, is a four-span 179 m long concrete arch-rib structure. Environmental deterioration required a second major rehabilitation between August 1999 and September 2000. Because the bridge provides a vital link between the downtown area and North Calgary, the rehabilitation had to accommodate uninterrupted emergency vehicle and bus traffic, thus dictating two stages of construction. Original transverse roadway beams were required to support loads occurring during the rehabilitation in a partially demolished condition. Emergency vehicle loadings were analyzed to ensure their safe passage. This project identifies the need for research to develop live load factors for emergency vehicles, bond equations for plain reinforcing bars and live load distribution factors for partially demolished bridges.
