Near-infrared (NIR) optical spectroscopy has shown promising diagnostic capability for early detection of breast cancer. Onr aim is to miniaturize existing technology and develop a suitable device for bedside monitoring. NIR based handheld imager is a compact and can be a cost effective complimentary solution to the existing technologies like X-ray mammography and ultrasound. The device is a continuous-wave imager with SNR of 46dB that monitors the changes in blood volume and oxygenation. Data are displayed on the handheld using dynamic color-coding scheme, which enhances the contrast in images. Preliminary analyses have been done using breast phantom and cuff ischemia experiment. Further experiments on breast model with tumor will be performed. Then, preliminary clinical results will be presented.
