Good morning ladies and gentleman. When our moderator Phyllis asked me to speak at this conference on the jewelry industry " THEN AND NOW", I said to her do you mean the "Demise of the Jewelry Industry" in the United State and Europe. She responded with a weak yes. So if this talk sounds like I am giving a Eulogy let me say that is exactly what you will hear. As I stated in my abstract, in the booklet WHY PROVIDENCE Alfred Weisberg who many of you know, detailed how the Providence/Attleboro area became the jewelry center of the United States in the late 18~(th) century and 19 th century. The real growth was in the costume jewelry area in the 20~(th) century since the Europeans and in particular the British looked upon the American product as "FAKE" jewelry.
