Metastable and resonance atoms in a constricted discharge in Xe

The radial and temporal dependences of the metastable 6~(3)P_(2) (Xe_(m)) and resonance 6~(3)P_(1) (Xe_(r)) state densities are measured in the active phase and afterglow of constricted pulsed discharge in xenon. The quantitative modeling is based on the system of time-dependent balance equations for densities of excited atoms and electrons, and electron temperature as well. The collisional-radiative recombination prevails over the dissociative recombination. The electron cooling after switching-off the voltage is caused mainly by electron-ion collisions. The results of the modeling reflect all peculiarities of the excited atoms' density behaviour in active phase and afterglow.
