The polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formed by incomplete combustion of fuels is of particular concern because some of them are mutagens and carcinogens. In this study, particulate PAH concentrations were measured and characterized in several road sites in Mexico City during 2003. Two tunnels, one bus station and one truck station were selected to determine differences between light and heavy-duty diesel truck PAH emissions. Particle sampling was carried out with two High-Vol samplers. The vehicle profiles were obtained by averaging the rates of individual PAH concentrations to the total concentration of total mass of the PAH measured. A Hewlett-Packard gas chromatograph equipped with mass spectrometer detector was used to analyze the samples. The PAH which had the highest concentration in all traffic samples were fluorantene and pyrene, although abundance of lower molecular weigh PAH, are higher in diesel powered fleet. Abundance of higher molecular weight PAH, such as benzo (ghi) perylene, and indene increases in the tunnel with restricted heavy-duty vehicle circulation. Local PAH profiles in different vehicle source classes are unique enough to be used in receptor modeling estimations.
