Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers operating at 850nm were first commercially introduced in 1996, primarily for multimode fiber optic systems operating at speeds up to 1Gbps. Since then, they have emerged as the only viable laser source in this application. Now, VCSELs operating in the telecommunications windows of 1310nm and 1550nm are beginning to be commercialized. These new lasers offer many of the advantages of DFB lasers, and the potential of significantly better economies. This paper will describe the development of long wavelength VCSELs at Honeywell.
