Broadband Passive Optical Networks (B-PONs) have emerged recently as a promising technique for service providers to deliver broadband services in a cost-effective manner to residential and business markets. Verizon, as an ILEC, has been evaluating PON applications for some time. The goals of this paper are: 1) to survey the current state of the art on PON technology (with emphasis on business applications), and, 2) to outline some issues and concerns that we have noted from our evaluations.
