The telephony synchronization infrastructure is considered by some to be mature. A key objective of the synchronization roadmap, laid out in this document, is to carefully explore the reality driving the evolution in telecommunication synchronization. This evolution is driven by a combination of improving the reliability and manageability of the existing synchronization infrastructure while concurrently supporting new features and capabilities such as integrated precise time in preparation for converged packet networks. The roadmap is divided into three sections. The first section describes the evolution of inter-office synchronization distribution and the emergence of primary reference source (PRS) technology. The capability to provide non-rooftop antenna central office solutions and multiple complementary PRS references per central office will fuel the continual growth in PRS deployment as the networks moves from less than one PRS per location to potentially multiple PRS in each central office. Secondly, the evolution to a significantly enhanced intra-office synchronization distribution approach is explored. At the heart of this enhancement is the introduction of the new intra-office two-way protocol compatible with existing T1/E1 synchronization interfaces. This new protocol is briefly described and the benefits are delineated. Finally, specific central office applications based on both the new distribution architecture and the new PRS systems are discussed.
