In Abrasive Electrical Discharge Grinding (AEDG) process the mechanical abrasion of grinding is combined with the electro-erosion of electrical discharge machining, leading to higher material removal rate. The major benefit of this process is that the electrical discharges simultaneously erode the workpiece and dress the wheel. This paper presents a thermal model and sequence of operations to analyze this self-dressing of the wheel. The model indicates that the embedded or lodged chips melt well before the end of the pulse on-time and the experimental results confirm the presence and effect of self-dressing in AEDG. Performance characteristics of Grinding-AEDG-Grinding sequence and the process optimization have been discussed.
