Characteristics of China's Sewage Sludge and Its Current Situation of Treatment and Disposal

The treatment and disposal of municipal sewage sludge is an important portion of the sewage treatment industry. This paper analyzes the characteristics of China's municipal sewage sludge and summarizes the current adopted technological processes of sludge treatment in China. The current situation of sewage sludge treatment and disposal in China is also reviewed. Gravity thickening of sludge is the main thickening measure to reduce the sludge volume. Anaerobic sludge digestion is a widely adopted sludge stabilization technology by most wastewater treatment plants. Aerobic sludge digestion and sludge composting are partially applied. Mechanical dewatering technologies are widely used in China. On the whole, land use of sewage sludge is the most important sludge disposal option in China.
