A New Coating Weight Measurement Sensor for Metallic and Shiny Substrates

Traditional online measurement sensors are inadequate to perform online measurements of oil, lacquer and polymer coating weight on metallic substrates. Beta and gamma gauges use a differential technique, measuring the product both before and after the coating is applied; this approach results in cumulative errors that are unacceptable. This new sensor, using Near- and Mid-Infrared technology, measures the coating directly with a single sensor. Unlike other infrared sensors, it is immune to optical interference effects, providing a level of measurement accuracy not achievable with any other online measurement approach. This IR sensor is also fast and provides excellent profile resolution, making it perfectly suited for high speed coating measurement and control.
