Awake craniotomy

For decades general anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation has been the anaesthesiological standard procedure for the resection of brain tumors. Vital parameters are controlled, intubation provides a safe airway especially during surgical procedures in the head/neck region, drugs used ensure analgesia and suppression of vegetative reactions. Immobilization is easy even with the patient in an atypical position. Furthermore the anaesthesiologist may control the intracranial pressure and the acid-base state of the patient by mechanical ventilation. At the same time these aspects ensure optimal working conditions for the neurosurgeon.
