A geotechnical model for the design and construction of a railroad tunnel through downtown Vina del Mar is presented. The model is based on an extensive geotechnical investigation undertaken including borings, test pits, micro seismic and gravimetric profiles and laboratory tests. A dynamic model for the soil behavior during strong motion earthquakes was developed based on a visco-elastic stress-strain relationship. The dynamic model was calibrated using the march 3, 1985, Vina del Mar acceleration records, and further used to predict the liquefaction potential along the tunnel foundation soils. The results of the analyses were compared with predictions based on the simplified NCEER method for evaluating liquefaction potential.
