This paper presents the results of the work performed by the Centre Spatial de Liege, an European Space Agency coordinated facility-testing house-, to develop a displacement sensor for use on board the ARIANE 5 launch vehicle. The sensor is able to detect a metallic object position through a poor electrical conductivity metallic wall. Laboratory tests demonstrate the operation of the sensor with a wall thickness up to 15 millimetres. The obtained sensors. performances and quality have been so good that further developments have been undertaken to produce displacement, proximity and position sensors for other applications. Applications using angular position sensor or rotational speed sensor are for example targeted.
