IRS translocation increases root biomass in Veery-type wheat isogenic lines and associates with grain yield.

We deteraiined the effects of short arm translocations of rye chromosome one (IRS) derived from Kavkaz winter wheat; in Pavon spring wheat background; on root biomass and grain yield. Pavon and its translocations were evaluated in glasshouse pot experiments in 1997 and 1998 and in field experiments in 1999 and 2000 under well-watered (wet) and droughted (dry) treatments. The IRS isogenic translocations in Pavon increased root biomass with a consistent position effect: IRS.IAL > IRS.IDL > IRS.IBL (Veery) > Pavon. A consistent positive trend was found between root biomass and grain yield in the glasshouse over years in dry conditions (r = 0.91); but not in wet conditions. Grain yield under wet field conditions showed a consistent positive trend with root biomass in wet glasshouse conditions (r = 0.90). Such a trend was not observed in dry conditions. The IRS translocations increased grain yield and grain weight; especially under well-watered field conditions. The overall mean grain yield was 4.066 t ha~(-1) for Pavon; 4.895 t ha~(-1) for IRS.IAL; 4.503 t ha~(-1) for IRS.IBL (Veery); and 4.632 t ha~(-1) for IRS.IDL. These results encourage the development and use of the IRS.IAL and IRS.IDL translocations in wheat breeding programs. They implyroot biomass and branching affect grain yield in this series.
