Recognizing the need for renovation, big transit authorities forge ahead the next generation of Communication-Based Train Control systems. Because of the size and complexity of their networks, they request standard multi-sourced automatic train control systems to achieve cost savings through competitiveness. The paper comments on the motivation of NYCT and RATP in their quest for standardized automatic control systems. It also explains how other transit authorities like Barcelona Transport Authority, Spain whose primary concern is to equip lines with state-of-the-art proven CBTC system also benefit from NYCT and RATP quest for standardized systems.
