This paper describes a simplified method for the design of industrial-type narrow V-belt drives. The well-known design procedure takes place in several steps. It considers various parameters e.g. belt length, pulley diameter, ratio and slip, which affect the operational behavior of a belt drive. Experimental results show the influence of the position of the small and large pulley which lead to a difference in power capability as well as the influence of some operational parameters e.g slip or the pre-load. The reason for this difference is determined. The result leads to a change of procedure where the horsepower rating for the driven pulley is calculated assuming that the ratio is equal to 1. The value determined has to be corrected by means of the contact surface only, if the ratio is smaller or larger than 1.
