Crash barrier is used to stop the forward momentum of an aircraft overshooting the runway in the emergency during landing or reject take off. This saves the pilot from injury and the aircraft from damage. The system is kept raised whenever there is flying activity in the station. It can also be put into action within seconds when the need arises. The aircraft engages the barrier at a high speed. The energy of the impact of the aircraft which is of the order of 80 mega joules is absorbed by a nylon net, high strength nylon tape and the water twister type of energy absorber (rotary hydraulic system). The present paper describes the energy absorption mechanisms of crash barrier. Design details of the multi element net and the rotary hydraulic system form part of the paper. The energy absorption medium in the rotary hydraulic system is water and ethylene glycol mixture. A simulated test method for the rotary hydraulic system using solid propellant rocket motors has also been described.
