In the present investigation, a finite element analysis procedure is developed to in-vestigate the low velocity impact behaviour of laminated composite structures, using a Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) model. The effective stress concept is introduced with a fourth order damage tensor to model the damaged structures. Using the hypothesis of elastic energy equivalence, the relationship between the engineering constants of damaged state and undamaged state is obtained. A nine noded isoparametric plate element based on the first order shear deformation theory is used to develop the finite element analysis procedure. The initiation and progress of damage due to impact is studied for different velocities of impactor.
