SEEKING A SECURE AND LOW COST COPY PROTECTION METHOD FOR DISC SYSTEMS

When using any copy protection mechanism, there are always two important factors to consider. One is security due to many copy protection measures being compromised. The other factor is the cost of copy protection. The cost benefit factor closely gauges changes to the existing devices. Simply implementing a new copy protection method without adding any significant features may not provide sufficient customer benefit. The economic decision must address the compromise between copy protection security and cost. This paper studies and evaluates current Philips technologies on copy protection and DRM which can be used in a disc system including disc playback, disc and authoring tools. The purpose is to find a reliable, feasible and economical copy protection solution. The strategy of this paper is to make the recommended solutions as broad as possible. Therefore, it will be applicable across a wide variety of disc platforms.
