API 1104, Welding Pipelines and Related Facilities. Nineteenth Edition, includes for the first time a systematic approach for the implementation of the Ultrasonic Testing (UT) method for inspection of pipeline girth welds. The need to include Ultrasonic Testing as an alternative method for weld inspection comes as the result of three main factors, 1) the need for flaw sizing to meet the requirements of Appendix A, 2) the need to mitigate the safety and environmental concerns that are present when radiography and film processing are used, and 3) the rapid acceptance of automated ultrasonic systems within the pipeline construction industry. Paragraph 11.4 of API 1104 provides the requirements for developing an inspection procedure as well as a methodology for qualifying both the procedure and the UT system. Once qualified, the UT method can then be applied as an acceptable quality control tool for the inspection of pipeline girth welds.
