Lycopene is oxidized by OsO_4-H_2O_2-Ether system and separated into 4 fractions with semi-preparative HPLC. Gap Junctional Communication (GJC) testes with WB-F344 cells show that 2 Fractions of them (Fraction 3 and 4) can stimulate the GJC level by 50% (p <0.001) at 1.0μM, nearly the same increase as that of lycopene and retinoic acid, and MTT-cell proliferation assay (also with WB-F344 cells) show that both of these 2 fractions have no toxicity to the cells. The author also present some information about the structure of these bio-active fractions, but some more need to be done to determine them.
