The present paper describes the microstructure of a new magnesium wrought alloy (ZK10 [1]) in the as-cast condition, and presents the experimental procedures and an evaluation of the results. Zr master alloys of two different suppliers were analyzed in laboratory-scale alloying experiments. The master alloy showing better qualities was subjected to an industrial-scale vertical direct chill (VDC) casting trial at LKR. Billets of the alloy containing Zr and rare earth metals were cast to a diameter of 185 mm and a length of 2000 mm for further extrusion trials. The master alloys, the samples from the alloying experiments, and the cast billets were investigated using metallography, SEM/EDX and segregation analysis.
