The hinge behavior of installed WDM-links using buried fiber and a small number of amplifiers and DCMs ( < 10) causes an non ergodic behavior periods of the mode coupling process over relevant observation periods. The comparison of spectral resolved DGD measurements over time with numerical simulations using the hinge model are characterizing the mode coupling process in installed fiber links in an appropriate way. Thus the Maxwellian distribution of DGD is not valid to calculate the outage probability of the WDM channel within installed WDM systems. The hinge behavior should be considered in future specifications and standardization activities concerning the PMD induced outage probability of WDM systems.
