Based on the strong absorption of UV light by nitrate, a sensor has been designed. It can be used in drinking water and wastewater. A comparison with standard wet chemistry analyzers favors this new technology due to the much lower cost of ownership. In drinking water, a nitrate analyzer is used to insure that the water stays below the 10 mg/1 limit, In wastewater, to comply with nutrient removal, denitrification can also be optimized using a nitrate measurement. Industrial wastewaters give some additional challenges as color or BOD load may limit the use of some technologies.
