Aircraft structural weight optimization is considered with Durability and Damage tolerant constraints. Nature of solution space for investigating the durability and damage tolerance of minimum weight structure is discussed. Altair's OptiStruct finite element driven solver of Hyperworks suite is used to provide a sound ground up optimization in several stages. A generic aircraft structural component is investigated as a proof of the concept which provides weight saving methodology in the initial conceptual phase of design by rigorous applications of optimization tools.
