Fly-Ash Based Binder for Pelletizing Steel Mill Desulfurization Slag

Steel mill by-products such as desulfurization slags are often used in low value applications or discarded These by-products can have a similar composition to a high-quality iron ore concentrate. Iron units can to recovered by pelletizing these materials into feed for the BOF or the blast furnace, but it is necessary to firs develop a process for agglomerating them into pellets. In this paper, a beneficiated desulfurization slaj concentrate was pelletized with both conventional bentonite binder and a new fly-ash based binder (FBB) tha was formulated by the investigators. Each year, 50,000 tons of this slag is produced at one particula steelmaking plant. The FBB used a high carbon fly-ash that currently has no use and is landfilled as waste Pellets bonded with the FBB had superior dry compressive strengths compared to the bentonite bonded pellets.
